Justin joined the School of Computing at University of Teesside as senior lecturer in graphical applications and visualisation in 1998 after a spell as a professor and director of new media at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Previous to working in the US he also worked for the visual effects boutique 'Lost In Space' where under the stewardship of the Computer Film Company and then later at the Neville Brody Research Studio's helped produce a range of award winning animation effects for the television market - most notably the production of the UK's National Lottery launch campaign entitled 'It Could Be You'.

Together with developing the animation, game, web & multimedia programmes within the School of Computing Justin also leads and contributes to the delivery of a range of undergraduate and postgraduate modules. Other duties within the department include making a year round contribution to the admissions and recruitment cycle. This would entail representing the school at various open day events, the interview of prospective students, parent hospitality, portfolio review, clearing and UCAS student application approval.

As employability co-ordinator for and on behalf of the school Justin is also responsible for liaising with the University’s careers and placement departments in an effort to place as many students in work as possible on graduation. As chair of the schools employability group Justin also oversees and maintains a range of partnerships with business both in the north east and nationally that are looking to fill a range of computing related positions. Events that Justin contributes to and that feed into the employability debate include Expotential, Expotalent, ExpoTees & Animex.

With the growing popularity of social networks amongst students, parents and staff Justin has been responsible for the establishment of up to 11 different networks/channels and he currently populates these channels with a variety of campus news, information, recruitment & employability related activity.

As external examiner I play an important role in the quality and standards. My role is to scrutinise and confirm that the final examination boards have been conducted fairly and in accordance with the University’s regulations and requirements. A distinctive feature of the course at BCU is it’s technology theme. Focusing on the technical aspects of the industry, the technology theme provides a detailed exploration of the nature of light and sound. As Professor in Computer Art at the Savannah College of Art & Design Justin contributed to the development and delivery of a range of animation & vfx programmes that looked to promote the disciplines of 2D, 3D and stop motion animation techniques. Justin also contributed to SCAD’s recruitment and admissions & marketing strategy with regular participation during student interviews and portfolio showcase events. Savannah College of Art and Design is a private, nonprofit university with locations in Savannah, Atlanta, Hong Kong and Lacoste in France.

Charged with leading a team of student artists, developers and programmers Justin developed a range of new media applications for the purpose of marketing and promoting the Savannah College of Art and Design nationally and internationally. The university today enroll’s more than 11,000 students from across the United States and around the world with international students comprising up to 14 percent of the student population. Justin was also charged with chairing the SCAD chapter of the New Media Consortium - an international not-for-profit consortium of more than 250 colleges, universities, museums, corporations, and other learning-focused organisations dedicated to the exploration and use of new media and new technologies.

The relocation of Lost In Space away from the Soho premises to The Neville Brody Research Studio based in Islington provided Justin with an opportunity to expand his feature film and television commercials work to now include interactive projects. Working alongside Neville Brody, Justin contributed to a range of award winning film and interactive projects that required a substantial amount of design work that included Honeycombe ‘Craver’, Levi’s ‘Spaceman’, Lucozades ‘Desmond The Dog’, Whitecastle ‘What You Crave’ to name but a few. His responsibilities included pitching, budgeting, client liaison, tape ingest, compositing, animating and the recruitment of freelance staff.

The pioneering digital film studio Lost In Space specialised in high end digital visual effects & animation for TV commercials and Feature Films . Credits whilst working out of the Computer Film Company’s Berwick Street address included Judge Dread, Hackers, The National Lottery Launch, Clearasil, Esso Oil and the Rolling Stones music video to name but a few. As animator and effects artist Justin used a range of software applications that included Elastic Reality, Softimage, Flint, Pandemonium and Adobe Photoshop. He was also responsible for the sourcing of freelance animation talent situated in the UK and further afield. The studio was founded by Christian Hogue in 1990 after time spent at Industrial Light & Magic working on the pioneering feature film Terminator 2.

Now part of the Prime Focus Group VTR was a tape recording, duplication and transferal service bureau based in the heart of Soho. When Justin was not providing hospitality to a range of client representing the TV commercials industry he was honing his skills as a designer and animator on the company’s Quantel Paintbox and Autodesk Flame suites.
